PhD Studentships in Advanced Manufacturing Technol

Applications are invited from suitably qualified students for two PhD studentships within the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Group (AMTG). The Advanced Manufacturing Group has an excellent international reputation for high quality theoretical and experimental research funded by EPSRC, DTI, EU and manufacturing industry. These include:

• Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Manufacturing Technology

• Nottingham Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre

Studentships are available in the following research areas:

Machining of next generation aerospace materials. The project will be directed towards establishing a machining methodology that will enable rapid optimisation of cutting conditions for next generation aerospace materials within a wide range of machining operations (e.g. milling, turning, hole making, broaching), tool performance assessment (e.g. wear, chipping, breakage), workpiece surface quality analysis (e.g. surface integrity/finish, geometrical accuracy), as well as key sensory signals analysis (e.g. force, spindle power, acceleration, acoustic emission). The project represents part of Rolls-Royce material development strategy and will be carried out within the Rolls-Royce UTC in Manufacturing Technology at University of Nottingham.

Freeform micromachining. The project will be focused on developing new micromachining (e.g. mechanical chip removal processes) strategies/techniques to ensure process stability leading towards the achievement of quality output measures (e.g. surface roughness, geometrical/dimensional accuracy) of micro-components used in miniature aerospace and medical applications. The project will be tailored around the manufacture of aerospace/medical micro-applications and will have support from a world-leading tool supplier.

The Research Group has excellent facilities for CNC machining, process monitoring, and geometrical/surface integrity analysis to support these research projects. The successful students will benefit from strategic partnerships with industry and collaborations with world-class specialists in manufacturing technologies.

Students should ideally have a first or upper second class degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering or another relevant science based discipline.

These studentships, which are available to UK citizens only, provide a stipend of £12,000 per annum (tax-free) in the first year, rising each year in line with EPSRC rates, plus payment of tuition fees.
