innocent princess 0 Report post Posted October 14, 2007 It is not a new thing to hear politicians talk about the Constituent Assembly (CA). But when students talk about it, it is a good change. Worldwide Nepalese Students' Organization - Nepal (WNSO) provided a platform for twelve students representing different colleges from the Kathmandu Valley to talk about "The role of youth in Constituent Assembly". On the occasion of the inter-college speech competition held at the United World Trade Centre at Tripureshwar, students of Certificate and Bachelors level gave speeches on the possible roles that youth can play before, during and after the CA polls. The first part of the program, the inaugural session, featured speeches from the guests. Abhi Subedi, the chief guest of the program, and other guests spoke about the relevance of the competition and the need of the youth to play a more active role in CA. However, the attendance at the program was meager - the turnout did not exceed fifty participants. Geeta Pathak Sangroula, the chief guest of the contest session, expressed, "The relevance of the competition in the present context is most suitable. However, the participants themselves were not clear about certain aspects and importance of the CA." When quizzed about the suitability of the program, she said, "It is good for the participants that they have now learnt more about CA. However, the competition would have been more effective had the presence been more encouraging." Pratik Bhandari from SOS was declared the best speaker who took home a cash prize of Rs 10,000, while Marshal Kumar Oli of Amrit Science College and Rajendra Pokhrel of R R Campus were declared second and third who won Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,500 respectively. Sandesh Shrestha of Kathmandu School of Law was awarded the consolation prize. Jagannath Kharel, a member of the organizing committee, illustrated the objective of the program thus, "Since most of us do not know what CA is, we wanted more people to know about it, including the organizers. Thus, the main objective of the program is for information dissemination as well as leadership building in students."
