Nepal Govt. to implement rural ICT scheme

11 May 2007

The Nepal Government is planning to launch a rural information and communications scheme in the country, so that people in the rural and remote areas would be benefited from the latest developments in the field of ICT.

The Ministry of Information and Communications is holding a national workshop to collect suggestions from the stakeholders and experts. The government has realised that ICT is playing an important role in socio-economic development. The government has already adopted a national strategy and policy for the development of ICT. Since Nepal is largely a rural country, there is a need for rural ICT schemes. The government is planning to build the necessary infrastructure, so that the rural ICT scheme would be soon launched in all villages of the country.

Why the students are not much instrested in IT education like BCA or BIT? Why only BE though BCA are good then BE in software?

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT EDUCATION IN NEPAL?

Well, the courses regarding IT has been introduced in Nepal by Pokhara and Purbanchal University, couple of years ago and few of the graduates(BCA & BIT) are out in the IT Profession as well. But the ratio of the IT graduates as compared to computer engineers is comparatively less. IT graduates are not actually computer engineers, they are misunderstood while identifying in the computing sector. Few IT graduates have been opting to study MBA. Hence, there is necessity of awareness and knowledge sharing between BIT,BCA,BCIS graduates, so that they will be clear about their career track and their choices of specialization whether they want to choose technical or managerial aspect for example: Information Manager or Programmer or Web designer etc.

I think IT education in Nepal has been making a good impact while it needs better standardization and supervision. Besides Pokhara Unversity and Purbanchal University, it would have been better if Tribhuwan University also introduce few programs related to IT. Courses offered by both PUs, are good enough but there are irrigularities and ineffective board of directors.

The prospect of IT students is very good seeing the IT development of our country, and the students passing +2 needs to be encouraged to obtain IT education.

Iin an Interview few years back, king of Jordan said he wants to make Jordan IT Hub in the world. Asked why he has such different idea than other Arab leaders; he replied, Jordan comparatively has no oil resources like other Arab nations has, and being land lacked country, it has another drawback to attract investor; so he think, noting can stop making IT hub as it travel through wire and wireless and control large share in world’s revenue.

We could have done same thing. Encourage more people to open better IT College, help existing college to introduce IT and improve IT infrastructure and improve country’s telephone system. With modernise communication system and thousands of IT graduates, Nepal could have been alternative to India for call centre, one of the main reason for Indian economic booming.

Unfortunately, we still have telephone system that said quite often “your line has been disconnected because you have not paid bill”, and I have to try few times to get through this message.

We have 56K broadband sometimes run slower than 56K modem that is running in Europe. According to understanding of broadband, it has to be minimum 512KB to be called as broadband. Misguiding and cheating is continuing and government have no time to think about country’s IT infrastructures.
