Bogus degree website shut
FEDERAL authorities in the United States have shut down a series of websites selling fake degrees from bogus universities which all used an address in Palmers Green, North London, to give their operation a cloak of respectability.
Hundreds of thousands of customers, mostly from the United States, bought fake mail-order degrees and driving licences from the sites, which claimed to represent, among others, the University of Palmers Green and the University of Devonshire. Tony Allen, an investigator with Enfield Trading Standards, said that although the gang running the racket were based in Romania and America, they used a drop box in Green Lanes as their address.
He said: “British universities have a very good reputation worldwide and you cannot award a degree in the UK unless you are an institution approved by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills. If you did not know Green Lanes, you would not know any better and you would not realise that the University of Palmers Green did not exist.”
The racketeers are thought to have raked in millions of dollars. Although buyers knew the degrees and driving licences were false, employers were unaware, meaning that in many cases people got jobs, some in teaching and childcare, without proper qualifications.
Enfield Trading Standards became aware of the racket when it started receiving complaints four years ago from employers trying to follow up references. Working with their US counterparts, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department for Education and Skills, trading standards officers intercepted mail sent to Green Lanes
