Research/Employment Opportunity- A Million Tree Planting Initiative

Under Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa a Million Tree planting

initiative has been launched. The research underway examines two

aspects of this initiative: measuring tree functions in the

environment to find out what physical effects a million more trees

will have on LA's environment, including effects on the urban heat

island, CO2 sequestration and other alleged benefits. The other

aspect is to examine the implementation of this new green approach

to LA's infrastructure using an institutional social learning

theoretical framework, as well as developing an analysis of the

potential economic benefits of such a program based on the values of

nature's services in the urban environment, using Millennium

Assessment valuation parameters. Work will involve observing

organizational change such as the development of new arrangements

and procedures, and the manner

in which the partners react to scientific information the research

team develops. We plan to use both qualitative social science

computing programs and attempt to construct Bayesian models that

represent the processes we are observing. We will use the

scientific analysis of tree functions to develop economic values, as

well as develop parallel values of well being. We are looking for

an entrepreneurial researcher, curious and motivated by this kind of

multi-disciplinary approach to environmental/institutional change,

who is flexible and willing.

Employment up to 3 years.

Job requirements:

Attending and recording meetings, transcribing important meetings

and interviews and applying a quantitative analytical tool.

Assisting in developing interview protocols analytical categories.

Developing and/or shaping Bayesian modeling protocols.

Literature reviews, presentations.

Interacting with the biophysical science researchers.

Writing and research.

Pay will be set at the appropriate Post Doc level.

Human Rights Advocate Program- Columbia University

Dear friends and colleagues:

I am delighted to announce that the application for the 2008 session

of the annual Human Rights Advocates Program (HRAP) at Columbia

University is now available. I would like to take this opportunity

to ask you to disseminate this information and application to human

rights activists based in the Global South as well as grassroots

activists in the United States.

HRAP is designed to prepare proven human rights leaders from the

Global South and marginalized communities in the U.S. to participate

in national and international policy debates on globalization by

building their skills, knowledge, and contacts. The Program features

a four-month residency at Columbia University in New York City with

a structured curriculum of advocacy, networking, skills-building,

and academic coursework.

Since 2004, HRAP has concentrated its support on individuals and

organizations that address issues broadly related to globalization.

The four-month intensive capacity building program based at Columbia

University in New York focuses on the following key issue areas:

* Environmental injustice

* Labor rights violations

* Abuses by multinational corporations

* Ramifications of resource extraction

* Public health crises

* Unsustainable development

* Intolerance, xenophobia, and social exclusion related to

globalization

Special attention is given to the above issues and their

intersection with gender, race, ethnicity, sexual identity, and/or

other sources of marginalization.

HRAP's current focus has emerged in recent years as a response to

the negative effects of globalization on those with the least access

to decision-making processes. Given their physical and symbolic

distance from centers of power, grassroots leaders are typically

unable to lobby for equitable outcomes from global policymakers.

The design of HRAP is intended to help level the playing field for

those lacking the access and relevant skills or knowledge to lobby

effectively for their causes. The Program provides advanced

training, support, and networking opportunities to respected human

rights leaders. The focus is both on strengthening the skills of the

individual Advocates and providing tools to build sustainable

organizations that advocate for disadvantaged peoples.

Participants are selected on the basis of their previous work

experience on human rights and globalization, commitment to the

human rights field, and demonstrated ability to complete graduate-

level studies. Advocates must originate from and reside in either

the Global South or the United States. Fluency in English is

required. Advocates must secure institutional endorsement from their

organizations for their participation in the Program and must commit

to returning to that organization upon completion of the Program.

This extremely competitive Program will admit approximately ten

participants. We make every effort to provide full fellowships to

cover program costs as well as travel and living expenses for

selected Advocates each year. Our staff will work with interested

candidates who have been waitlisted for the Program to identify

potential funding sources in cases where we do not yet have the

resources to provide a full fellowship.

Attached please find an overview of the Program and the 2008

application form. The 2008 HRAP will take place from the middle of

August to the middle of December 2008. The completed application is

due by October 9, 2007. Those who make it to the second round of the

application process will be asked to submit additional materials

including essays and letters of reference. Please note that late or

incomplete applications will not be accepted.

For further information or to download additional copies of the

application, please refer to our website at

http://humanrights.columbia.edu/hrap/ .

Additional information can be requested by email from

hradvocates@columbia.edu, by phone at +1 (212) 854 7372, or by fax

The University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources &

accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental

Education Program Evaluation. This position will be an 85% position

for one

year. The fellow will be responsible for designing and implementing

two

environmental education program evaluations under the supervision of

Dr.

Michaela Zint, Associate Professor of Environmental Education &

Communication. The first evaluation will seek to assess the extent

to which

a website designed to assist environmental educators with evaluating

their

programs is accomplishing this goal. As part of this evaluation,

will work closely with five environmental educators as they

undertake an

evaluation of their own programs using the website. The fellow will

produce

a publishable article synthesizing results from these five case

studies.

The second project will consist of an external evaluation of up to 25

environmental education programs. These programs were funded by a

federal

agency to help children build meaningful and lasting connections

with nature

in response to Richard Louv's Last Child in the Woods ? Saving Our

Children

from Nature Deficit Disorder. The fellow will identify outcomes to

evaluate, design instruments to collect data

on these outcomes, analyze data, and produce a publishable article

synthesizing results from this evaluation. The fellow will work

with the 25

programs to help determine relevant outcomes, identify ways to

facilitate

the program's data collection process, and to discuss results. The

fellow's

work is expected to lead to at least two publications to be

submitted for

consideration to peer reviewed journals.

Qualifications: Candidates should be highly motivated with a Ph.D. in

Environmental Education, Education, Health Education, Evaluation or a

related field. Candidates should have excellent skills in

quantitative and

qualitative research and should have experience carrying out similar

program

evaluations. Strong verbal and written communication and

organizational

skills are a must. Candidates should also have a high level of

self-direction.

Applicants should have completed their requirements for a Ph.D.

degree and

be eligible to work in the United States or be able to secure valid

immigration status and work authorization before the expected start

date and

maintain valid immigration status and work authorization throughout

employment. The fellowship offers a funded salary plus an excellent

benefits

Law School Admission Council Research Grant Program

The Law School Admission Council Research Grant Program funds

empirical

research on legal training and legal practice broadly viewed. This

includes

the study of precursors to legal training (including demographic

variables),

all varieties of legal training itself and the work that lawyers,

judges,

law teachers, and other legal professionals do after they complete

their

training ("law jobs").

The program welcomes proposals for comparative research proceeding

from any

of a variety of methodologies, a potentially broad range of topics,

and

varying time frames. Proposals will be judged on the importance of

the

questions addressed, their relevance to the mission of LSAC, and the

quality

of the research designs. Eligible investigators need not be members

of law

school faculties. Proposals from interdisciplinary teams of law

faculty and

empirical researchers are strongly encouraged. Comparative proposals

about

topics outside Canada and the United States in part should include

some

explicit connection to legal education or professionals within those

countries (e.g., foreign student study in American or Canadian law

schools

or aspects of legal transplants affecting law and legal

institutions).

Although the program supports only empirical research, a meritorious

project

could be informed by any disciplinary perspective and be guided by

any of a

variety of methodologies. Applicants may use methodologies derived

from

anthropology, criminology, demography, economics, history, political

science, psychology, and sociology. Projects can be qualitative or

quantitative, cross-sectional or longitudinal. They may involve

surveys,

experiments, correlational methods, systematic observations,

ethnography,

and so on. The program, however, requires that any project that is

funded be

planned and conducted in accordance with the best social scientific

standards that are applicable to the type of research in question.

Some types of projects are not eligible for funding under this

research

grant program. Examples of projects that would NOT be funded include

doctrinal studies (e.g., investigations into points of substantive

law),

curriculum development or evaluation for a particular law school,

preparation of casebooks, and other course-specific material.
